Static IP at Home: Who Needs It and Why

A static IP address can make remote access, office VPNs and IP whitelisting much easier. Here is when it is worth adding.

Static IP at Home: Who Needs It and Why

Most home broadband connections receive a dynamic IP address — a public address that can change from time to time. For browsing, streaming and video calls, this is perfectly fine. But some remote workers need a fixed, or static, IP address.

What a static IP is

A static IP is a public internet address assigned permanently to your connection. Websites and services always see the same address when you connect from home.

When a static IP helps

  • IP whitelisting: Some company VPNs, cloud consoles, banking tools and client systems allow access only from approved IP addresses.
  • Remote access: Reaching a home computer, NAS drive or CCTV recorder from outside is simpler with a fixed address.
  • Development and testing: Developers running test servers or webhooks benefit from a stable endpoint.
  • Self-hosted services: Small home labs or personal servers need a reachable address.

When you don't need one

Standard VPN apps, video conferencing, email and cloud tools work perfectly well on a dynamic IP. If your employer has not asked for one, you probably do not need it.

Security considerations

A static IP makes your home connection easier to find on the internet. Keep router firmware updated, change default passwords, close ports you are not using and avoid exposing devices like cameras directly to the internet. A VPN into your home network is safer than opening ports.

How to get one

WFH Essentials offers a static public IP as an add-on. Our team configures it on your connection and can help you set up port forwarding or VPN access securely if needed.

Telling your IT team

Once you have a static IP, share it with your company's IT team so they can add it to allowlists.

The bottom line

If your work tools depend on a fixed address, a static IP saves daily hassle and support tickets. If not, a standard connection is all you need — and you can always add a static IP later.
