Helping Kids Study Online While You Work From Home
When parents work and children study online at the same time, the home network needs a plan. Here is how to share it smoothly.

In many homes, parents are on video calls while children attend online classes, submit assignments and watch recorded lectures. When everyone is online at once, a little planning keeps the household running smoothly.
Map your busy hours
Note when classes, important meetings and exams overlap. These are the hours your connection needs headroom. If overlaps are frequent, a 100 Mbps or higher plan avoids constant juggling.
Give priority where it matters
Some routers let you prioritise specific devices or applications. During school and work hours, prioritise the laptops used for classes and calls over smart TVs and gaming consoles.
Wire the most important desk
If only one desk can be wired, use it for whoever has the most critical calls or exams that day. Wired connections remove Wi-Fi variability entirely.
Spread devices across Wi-Fi bands
Put laptops on 5 GHz for speed and leave 2.4 GHz for devices farther away. Mesh Wi-Fi helps if children study in rooms far from the router.
Agree on household rules
- No large game downloads or 4K streaming during class and meeting hours.
- Headphones with microphones for everyone on calls.
- Shared calendar for important calls and exams.
Make study spaces comfortable
Good lighting, a stable chair and a quiet corner matter as much as bandwidth. Keep chargers within reach so devices don't die mid-class.
Keep children safe online
Use kids profiles in apps, safe-search settings and DNS filtering to block inappropriate content on school devices.
The bottom line
With enough bandwidth, some prioritisation and a few house rules, work and school can happily share one fiber connection — and everyone ends the day with fewer frozen screens.
