Setting Up a Separate Network for Work Devices
Keeping work laptops on their own Wi-Fi network improves security and performance. Here is how to do it at home.

Your work laptop shares the home network with smart TVs, security cameras, children's tablets, gaming consoles and guests' phones. Each of those devices is a potential weak point. Separating your work devices is a simple and effective step.
Why separation matters
If a smart device with outdated software or a guest's infected phone is compromised, an attacker on the same network can try to reach other devices. Putting work devices on a separate network makes this much harder.
Use the guest network wisely
Most routers offer a guest Wi-Fi network that isolates devices from the main network. A practical approach:
- Main network: work laptops and personal computers
- Guest network: visitors, smart TVs, speakers, cameras and other gadgets
Strong passwords and modern security
Use a long passphrase for each network and choose WPA2 or WPA3 security. Avoid sharing your main network password with guests.
Keep firmware updated
Router updates fix security issues. Check for updates monthly or enable automatic updates if available.
Change default admin credentials
Routers often ship with default admin usernames and passwords. Change them so nobody on your network can alter router settings.
Work VPN and company policies
Use your employer's VPN when required and follow their device policies. A separate network complements, rather than replaces, corporate security tools.
Consider DNS protection
Network-level DNS filtering blocks known phishing and malware domains for all devices, adding another layer of protection at home.
The bottom line
A separate network for work devices takes minutes to set up and adds a meaningful layer of protection. Combine it with strong passwords and regular updates for a secure home office.
