Fiber vs Cable vs DSL: Why Fiber-to-the-Home Wins

Fiber, cable and DSL can all advertise big numbers. Here is what actually changes in day-to-day use, and why FTTH has become the default for new connections.

Fiber vs Cable vs DSL: Why Fiber-to-the-Home Wins

Most Indian homes today have three broad choices for wired internet: old copper telephone lines (DSL), coaxial or Ethernet cable from a local operator, and fiber-to-the-home (FTTH). They can look similar on a plan sheet, but they behave very differently.

How each technology carries data

DSL pushes data over copper phone wires, and the signal weakens quickly with distance from the exchange. Cable and LAN-based networks share a copper segment among many homes in a building or street. FTTH runs a glass fiber all the way to your home and carries data as light, which barely weakens over kilometres.

What you notice as a user

  • Consistent evening speeds: fiber has far more capacity in the access network, so the 9 pm slowdown is much smaller.
  • Better upload: video calls, cloud backups and sending large files need upload speed, where copper struggles.
  • Lower latency: games and calls feel more responsive.
  • Weather resistance: glass does not corrode, and fiber is not affected by electrical interference or water seeping into joints the way copper is.

Is fiber harder to install?

Not any more. In most buildings a thin fiber drop is routed along existing ducts to a small termination box in your home. The router connects to that box, and the rest of the setup is the same as any broadband connection.

When does an older technology still make sense?

If fiber is not yet available at your address, a good cable connection can be fine for light use. But for families that stream, study and work from home, fiber is the technology that keeps pace as needs grow — speed upgrades are usually just a plan change, with no new wiring.

The bottom line

Fiber is not just about headline speed. It is about stable performance at peak hours, strong uploads and a connection that will still be enough five years from now.
