What Is an Internet Leased Line and How Does It Work?

A plain-English explanation of internet leased lines — dedicated bandwidth, symmetric speeds, SLAs and when your business needs one.

What Is an Internet Leased Line and How Does It Work?

An Internet Leased Line (ILL) is a dedicated connection between your office and your provider's core network. It is the backbone of most medium and large business networks in India, and increasingly the first choice for growing companies that can no longer tolerate unpredictable internet.

Dedicated, not shared

With broadband, many customers share capacity in the access network, and speeds can vary with demand. With a leased line, the bandwidth you buy is reserved exclusively for your organisation. This is often described as 1:1 contention — one customer per unit of capacity.

Symmetric speeds

A 100 Mbps leased line delivers 100 Mbps upload and 100 Mbps download. Symmetry matters for video conferencing, cloud backups, hosting applications, VPN access for remote staff and sending large files to clients.

Backed by a service-level agreement

Leased lines come with an SLA that defines availability targets, response times and restoration times. If the provider misses those commitments, service credits are applied. This contractual accountability is one of the main reasons businesses choose ILL.

Static IP addresses

An ILL includes a block of static public IPv4 addresses, typically a /29 or larger, plus native IPv6. You can host servers, VPN gateways, mail systems and remote access services reliably.

How it is delivered

Fiber runs from the provider's network to your building and terminates on a managed device in your server room or comms cabinet. Your own router or firewall connects to it. Optional redundant paths — a second fiber via a different route — protect against cuts.

Monitored around the clock

Leased lines are monitored by a 24/7 network operations centre. Faults are often detected and ticketed before you notice.

Typical users

Corporate offices, contact centres, hospitals, banks and NBFCs, IT companies, manufacturing plants and any business hosting services on site.

The bottom line

If your business depends on predictable, high-quality internet, a leased line provides dedicated capacity, symmetric speeds and contractual accountability that broadband cannot match.
