Streaming in 4K: What You Need Beyond a Fast Plan
4K streaming needs more than bandwidth. Learn which TV settings, devices and Wi-Fi choices actually deliver crisp Ultra HD at home.

You have a 4K TV and a fast fiber plan, yet shows still look soft. 4K streaming depends on a chain of things — and the weakest link decides the picture.
Check the subscription tier
Many apps stream 4K only on premium plans. Bundled or "lite" tiers may cap quality at HD. Look at your plan details inside the app.
Bandwidth per screen
A single 4K stream needs roughly 20–25 Mbps of steady bandwidth. Two 4K screens plus phones and laptops means a 100 Mbps plan or higher is comfortable.
Wi-Fi is often the bottleneck
TVs are usually far from the router, behind walls or inside cabinets. Connect the TV with an Ethernet cable if you can. If not, use the 5 GHz band and keep the router within a room or two of the TV, or add a mesh node nearby.
TV and device settings
- Update the TV's software and the streaming apps.
- In the app settings, set video quality to "Auto" or "High", not "Data saver".
- Use HDMI ports that support 4K at 60 Hz if you use a streaming stick.
Content must be 4K too
Not every title is available in 4K. Look for the 4K or UHD badge in the app.
The bottom line
For true 4K, check your subscription tier, give your TV a strong connection — ideally wired — and keep apps updated. Fiber takes care of the rest.
