Moving Business Applications to the Cloud: A Practical Roadmap

Many Indian businesses still run accounting, ERP, file shares and internal applications on servers in a back room. Those servers age, fail at inconvenient times and are hard to reach for remote staff. Moving them to the cloud improves reliability and access — if the move is planned carefully.

Step 1: Take an inventory

List every server and application, who uses it, how much data it holds, how critical it is and which other systems it talks to. Note software licences, vendor support requirements and any compliance constraints.

Step 2: Prioritise by risk and benefit

Start with low-risk workloads such as file shares, test environments or a standalone application. Leave complex, tightly integrated systems for later phases once your team is comfortable.

Step 3: Choose the right model for each workload

• Lift and shift: move existing servers as virtual machines with minimal changes.
• Replatform: move to managed databases or modern operating systems during migration.
• Replace with SaaS: sometimes a cloud-native product is simpler than migrating an old application.

Step 4: Plan connectivity

Users need fast, reliable access to cloud systems. For critical applications, private cloud connectivity avoids public internet bottlenecks. Check that branch internet links have enough capacity.

Step 5: Migrate, test and cut over

Copy data, run systems in parallel where possible, test thoroughly with real users and schedule the final cut-over outside business hours, with a rollback plan ready.

Step 6: Operate and optimise

Monitor performance, patch regularly, test backups and review costs monthly. Right-size servers once you see real usage.

Underestimating data transfer time, forgetting licence restrictions, skipping user testing and not planning for internet outages at offices.
