CCTV Over the Internet: Bandwidth and Static IP Explained
Viewing cameras remotely and uploading to the cloud need the right connection. Here is what to plan for.

Remote CCTV viewing is one of the most common reasons small businesses upgrade their internet connection. Owners want to check on the shop, warehouse or clinic from home — and increasingly want footage stored safely in the cloud. Both need planning.
Upload bandwidth is the key number
Each HD camera streaming continuously to the cloud can use 1–4 Mbps of upload, depending on resolution, frame rate and compression. Eight cameras can need 15–30 Mbps of continuous upload, which can crowd out video calls and other business traffic on a small connection.
Local recording vs cloud recording
- Local NVR/DVR: records on site and only uses internet bandwidth when you view footage remotely. Cheaper on bandwidth but vulnerable to theft or damage.
- Cloud recording: uploads footage continuously off site. Safer for evidence but requires much more upload capacity.
- Hybrid: records locally and uploads only motion events or selected cameras.
Why a static IP helps
Some NVRs need a fixed public IP address for remote access. A static IP avoids dynamic DNS workarounds and makes connections more reliable. Business broadband and leased lines offer static IPs.
Secure remote access properly
Change default passwords on cameras and recorders, update firmware and avoid exposing camera ports directly to the internet. A VPN into the office network or the manufacturer's secure cloud service is safer than open port forwarding.
Separate the cameras
Put cameras and recorders on their own VLAN. Cameras are frequent targets for botnets; isolation protects the rest of your network.
Plan storage and retention
Decide how many days of footage you need and size local storage or cloud subscriptions accordingly.
The bottom line
Plan upload bandwidth, choose the right recording model and use a static IP with secure access. With the right connection, remote CCTV becomes a reliable tool rather than a constant frustration.
