Securing Your Small Business Network: A Starter Guide
Small businesses are frequent targets for cyber-attacks. These basic steps significantly reduce your risk.

Attackers often target small businesses precisely because they expect weaker defences than large enterprises. The good news is that a handful of basics closes the most common gaps — and most of them cost little or nothing.
Change every default password
Routers, Wi-Fi access points, CCTV cameras, NVRs and printers often ship with default usernames and passwords that are published online. Change them on day one and store new credentials securely.
Segment your network
Use separate VLANs and Wi-Fi networks for staff, guests, payment terminals and cameras. If one device is compromised, segmentation limits how far an attacker can go.
Keep firmware and software updated
Routers, firewalls, operating systems and applications receive security patches. Apply them regularly or use a managed service that does it for you.
Use protective DNS
DNS filtering blocks connections to known phishing and malware domains for every device on the network, including those that cannot run antivirus software.
Back up data properly
Keep regular backups of critical data both locally and off site, with at least one copy that ransomware cannot alter. Test restores periodically.
Enable multi-factor authentication
Turn on MFA for email, banking, cloud storage and remote access. Stolen passwords alone are then not enough.
Train your team
Most breaches start with a phishing email or a malicious link. Short, regular reminders about suspicious emails, fake invoices and urgent payment requests go a long way.
Limit remote access
Avoid exposing remote desktop or camera ports directly to the internet. Use a VPN with MFA.
The bottom line
Strong passwords, segmentation, updates, DNS protection, backups and staff awareness form a solid security foundation for any small business. UbiFi Business can manage many of these for you.
