Structured Cabling Basics for New Offices

Good cabling is the invisible foundation of a reliable office network. Here are the essentials to specify during fit-out.

Structured Cabling Basics for New Offices

Wi-Fi gets the attention, but almost every office network depends on cabling behind the walls and above the ceilings. Well-designed structured cabling lasts for years; poor cabling causes intermittent faults that are hard to diagnose.

What structured cabling means

Structured cabling is an organised system of cables, patch panels and connectors that link desks, access points, cameras and phones to a central rack. Every cable is labelled, tested and documented.

Choose the right cable category

Cat6 is a sensible minimum for new offices, supporting gigabit speeds comfortably. Cat6A supports 10 Gbps over longer distances and is a good choice for access points and future-proofing.

Plan enough data points

Count desks, meeting rooms, printers, access points, CCTV cameras, access control panels and screens — then add spare points. Adding cables later is disruptive.

Fiber for backbones

Connect floors or distant racks with fiber backbones for high bandwidth and immunity to interference.

Keep within distance limits

Copper Ethernet runs should stay under 90 metres from patch panel to outlet. Plan rack locations to keep runs short.

Separate from power

Run data cables away from electrical cables and lighting ballasts to avoid interference, and use proper containment such as trays and conduits.

Label and document

Every outlet and patch panel port should be labelled consistently, with a floor plan showing locations. This saves hours during troubleshooting.

Test and certify

Insist on test reports for every cable showing it meets the specified standard.

Rack organisation

Use cable managers, short patch leads and colour coding to keep racks tidy and maintainable.

The bottom line

Structured cabling is a long-term investment. Specify it properly during fit-out and your network will be easier to manage for years.
