Securing International Private Links
Even private circuits benefit from encryption and access control. Here is a layered approach.

Private international circuits significantly reduce exposure compared with internet-based connections, but best practice is still to apply layered security. Data crossing borders and multiple carrier networks deserves extra protection.
Encrypt in transit
- MACsec encrypts traffic at Layer 2 on Ethernet links with minimal overhead.
- IPsec encrypts at Layer 3 and is widely supported on routers and firewalls.
Encryption protects data even if traffic is somehow intercepted along the path.
Segment traffic
Use VLANs or VRFs to separate different types of traffic — production, corporate, voice and management — so that a problem in one area does not spread.
Control access at both ends
Firewalls at each end should permit only the traffic that needs to cross the link. Avoid flat networks that allow every system in India to reach every system abroad.
Protect management interfaces
Restrict access to routers and network devices, use strong authentication and log administrative actions.
Monitor traffic
Baseline normal traffic patterns and alert on anomalies, such as unusually large transfers or unexpected protocols.
Key and certificate management
Rotate encryption keys and certificates according to policy and document who manages them.
Compliance alignment
Align controls with your organisation's global security standards and any regulatory requirements in both countries.
Physical security
Protect network equipment in locked rooms with access logging.
The bottom line
Combine private connectivity with encryption, segmentation, access control and monitoring for strong protection of international data flows.
