Moving into a New Office? Plan Connectivity Before the Fit-Out
Internet is often the last thing planned and the first thing needed. Here is how to have your new office online on day one.

When businesses move into a new office, the focus is usually on interiors, furniture and lease negotiations. Internet connectivity is often an afterthought, and then the team arrives on day one to find no working network. Planning connectivity before the fit-out avoids that scramble.
Check feasibility before you sign
Not every building has fiber available from every provider. Ask about connectivity options while shortlisting properties. A building with ready fiber access can save weeks.
Understand lead times
New business connections can take anywhere from a few days for broadband to several weeks for dedicated leased lines, depending on building access, permissions and civil work. Start the process as soon as the lease is confirmed.
Coordinate with the fit-out team
Your interior contractor needs to know where the network rack will go, where cables enter the building and how many data points each area requires. Changes after walls and ceilings are finished are expensive.
Plan the server or network room
Choose a ventilated, secure space with dedicated power, ideally on a UPS. Avoid cupboards that become hot or are used for storage.
Design Wi-Fi early
Access point locations depend on ceiling design, partitions and furniture layouts. Plan cabling for access points alongside lighting and air-conditioning.
Arrange backup connectivity
A secondary link from a different provider or a 4G/5G router protects you from day-one surprises and future outages.
Port numbers and update listings
If you are bringing phone numbers, start porting in advance. Update your address and contact details on your website and listings.
Test before move-in day
Have connectivity, Wi-Fi, phones and printers tested a few days before staff arrive.
