DDoS and Online Exams
Online assessments must stay available. Here is how to protect them.

Online exams depend entirely on availability. If the exam platform becomes unreachable — even for a few minutes — students lose time, stress rises and institutions may have to reschedule. That makes online exams an attractive target for disruption, sometimes by students themselves.
Understand the risk
Exam schedules are known in advance. Attackers can rent DDoS services cheaply and time attacks precisely. Both campus links and exam platforms can be targeted.
Protect the platform
Host exam platforms on infrastructure with DDoS mitigation and a web application firewall. Restrict access to expected users where possible, such as through institutional login or IP ranges for on-campus exams.
Protect campus connectivity
For exams taken on campus, ensure the campus internet link is protected upstream and has a backup path.
Scale for legitimate peaks
Exams create sudden, synchronised load at start and submission times. Ensure the platform can handle these peaks alongside any attack traffic.
Auto-save and resilience
Platforms that save answers frequently protect students from losing work during brief disruptions.
Contingency plans
Define in advance what happens if the platform becomes unavailable: extended time, alternative sessions or offline papers.
Investigate and deter
Log attacks and work with providers and authorities to investigate. Make clear that disrupting exams is a serious offence.
The bottom line
Protecting online exams requires both strong infrastructure and clear contingency plans. UbiFi DDoS Protection helps keep assessments available.
