Network Segmentation for Campuses
Separating admin, academic, hostel and CCTV networks reduces risk. Here is how to design segmentation.

On a flat campus network, every device can talk to every other device. That means a single infected laptop in a hostel can scan for and attack the finance server, the exam system or the CCTV recorders. Segmentation divides the network into zones so problems stay contained.
Typical campus segments
- Administration: ERP, finance, HR and admissions staff
- Academic: faculty devices, labs and classroom systems
- Students and hostels: personal devices and room connections
- Guests: visitors, parents and event attendees
- CCTV and security: cameras, recorders and access control
- IoT and facilities: printers, displays and building systems
- Exams: dedicated systems used during assessments
How segmentation works
VLANs separate traffic logically on shared switches and access points. The firewall sits between segments and decides exactly which traffic may cross, so separation is enforced rather than assumed.
Apply least privilege
Allow only the flows that are genuinely needed. Students need the LMS and the internet, not the HR system. Cameras need to reach their recorder, not the internet at large.
Map Wi-Fi to segments
Each Wi-Fi network — staff, student, guest — places users into the correct segment automatically after login, so policies follow people without manual effort.
Isolate exams
During assessments, exam networks can be locked down to permit only the exam platform, reducing both cheating and the risk of disruption.
Monitor the boundaries
Logging traffic between segments reveals infected devices and misconfigurations quickly, because unexpected cross-segment traffic stands out.
Document and review
Keep a simple diagram of segments and permitted flows, and review it whenever new systems, buildings or services are added.
The bottom line
Segmentation limits the spread of attacks and protects critical systems. UbiFi Managed Firewall designs and enforces segmentation tailored to each campus.
